Obituary: Charles (Charlie) Ray Etheredge

Longview, TX - Charles (Charlie) Ray Etheredge passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018. His wife of 68 years, Lillian, was by his side. Charlie and Lillian were married on December 24, 1949 and were blessed with one child, Darren Kelly, who preceded them in death.

Charlie was born to D.C. and Lela Etheredge in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on September 15, 1929. One of eight children and the youngest of six boys, Charlie grew up learning to love nature. His passion for fishing, hunting and gardening became one of many outlets he used to enhance the lives of others. From helping homeowners and businessmen who might otherwise be overlooked to assisting those less fortunate, Charlie never failed to share his blessings.

Charlie worked at Lone Star Steel in the early 1950's as a machinist apprentice. He went on to open and manage his machine shop, "Etheredge Machine and Tool" and eventually retired at the age of 52. Though retired, he never slowed down. A champion checker player, Charlie knew how to win in every area of life and continually offered life-changing advice to the many who sought his wisdom. Never outsmarted, Charlie had a side-splitting joke for anyone he met and a thought provoking story that warmed the heart of all he encountered.

Charlie's Masonic career spanned 50 plus years. Known in the Masonic circle as a "Mason's Mason," Charlie's accomplishments include Past Master of the James F. Taylor Lodge No. 169 in Hallsville, Texas, District Deputy Grande Master of Masonic District 10 A, a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and belonged to York Rite and Shriners. Charlie was also the recipient of numerous awards including the Stephen F. Austin Distinguished Service Award.

Charlie created the Charles and Lillian Etheredge Masonic Scholarship program for Hallsville I.S.D. Valuing the importance of education and leadership, Charlie also donated timber from his property and funded materials for building the log cabin that is currently located on the property of the James F. Taylor Lodge in Hallsville, Texas. As a result of his generosity, Scouts and other community service organizations continue to meet there today.

Charlie also became a prolific speaker who was always in high demand. He cherished the opportunity to be the officiator of over one hundred Masonic funerals.

Although his accomplishments are endless, Charlie would be quick to tell you that the importance of serving his family was of utmost priority. Survived by one sister, Betty Kennemer, one brother- in-law Aaron Dykes, a host of nieces and nephews and an infinite number of friends, the love that surrounded Charlie was a reflection of the love he invested in the lives of others. Lillian would like to especially thank George and Cathie Etheredge, J.D. and Kathy Price and Jason and Hank Hutchinson for their unending support.

Charlie's favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 22:1, is an accurate portrayal of the life he lived: "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches."

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 23, at 2:00 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, Texas. While flowers are welcomed, a donation may be made to the Charles and Lillian Etheredge Masonic Scholarship program at the James F. Taylor Lodge Number 169 in Hallsville, Texas.
